Values are not just high ideals – they are deeply held beliefs that we demonstrate through action.
At Education4diversity our guiding values are based on the African concept of Ubuntu:
· That all human beings are interconnected
· That every action has implications for those around us
· That personal identity is the result of the past and present lives of others
Within the Ubuntu concept the specific values we espouse and want to share with schools and other organisations are:
Values of structure:
EQUALITY
RIGHTS
PARTICIPATION
COMMUNITY
SUSTAINABILITY
Values of relationship:
TRUST
COMPASSION
HONESTY
COURAGE
RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY
NON-VIOLENCE
FRIENDSHIP
Values of spirit:
JOY
HOPE
LOVE
BEAUTY
SELFLESSNESS
TENACITY
Alex and Jonathan chat about the values that underpin their approach to diversity
We worked with a values-creating school in Burundi, central Africa in April 2023. Click on video to see students and teachers talk about what Ubuntu values like compassion and respect mean to them.
‘Just as in the biosphere diversity is strength, so in human culture diversity and acceptance of difference are the true bases of peaceful, flourishing and harmonious development.’
